New Synth, New Era

Me and my Yamaha synth performing back in 2017

In a recent gig my old synthesiser was destroyed by the rain. It was the only synth I use and I have had it for 6 years. I performed countless gigs, wrote so many songs and learned so much about synthesis with it.

Me and Tata jamming in a park with the synth in 2018, refusing to go home.

I’m a very loyal person when it comes to gear. I believe in developing a relationship with them and really let time evolves my way of approaching the same machine. And I was impressed by how much new things I can still get from this reface CS up till it died.

But the day has come to pick a new partner, and after some research I picked Lyra-8 from Soma Laboratory.

The reason I picked this synth was because it hasn’t got a traditional keyboard but still has 8 sensors for some sort of playing. I feel like I could learn it and perform lives in the future with it and inspires me to write new music that is less concrete within western traditions.

Upon reading on the philosophy behind the making of the synth, I found out the creator was thinking about how our brain function in a non-linear way, that isn’t quite the way computer works. This piece of information makes me think about all the complicated feelings that I have been feeling, and how unnecessary it is for me to try and make sense of every single thing that’s happening in my brain. In this way I feel like I could use this synth as an extra limb or organ to express myself, once I am more familiar with it.

I have of course already been playing it all the time and got some recordings of it. They are still super raw and just explorations of sounds I could achieve with it. I won’t share them here cause they are not super interesting. But I will update on this when I start to really put in my emotions into playing it, in a more intuitive way.

This piece of tech has already given so many ideas on developing Swan Song, and how I can write with it. Cannot wait.
